Removing Tattoos with the Picosecond Laser
Tattoos have been an expression of individuality, art and culture throughout history. But what if someone regrets a tattoo or if it no longer fits their lifestyle or professional ambitions? In the Netherlands, as elsewhere in the world, tattoo removal is growing. One of the most advanced and effective methods of tattoo removal currently practiced is the use of the pico laser.
What is a Pico Laser?
The pico laser, also known as the picosecond laser, is an advanced medical laser that emits ultra-short pulses of light. Compared to older laser technologies such as the q-switched laser, the pico laser emits pulses that are much shorter, often in the picosecond (one trillionth of a second) range. These ultra-short pulses are powerful enough to break tattoo ink into microparticles, but they do not target surrounding skin tissue, minimizing damage.

How Does the Pico Laser for Tattoo Removal Work?
Removing a tattoo with a pico laser is a process known as photothermolysis. During the treatment, the laser energy is absorbed by the tattoo ink. This results in rapid heating and fragmentation of the ink particles into smaller fragments. The body's immune system can then clear these small fragments more easily.
Here's an overview of the process:
-
Consultation::
It all starts with a personal consultation. During this consultation, the specialist will assess the tattoo, explain the treatment and discuss the client's expectations. -
Treatment sessions:
Tattoo removal with the pico laser requires several sessions, usually spread over several months. The duration of the process depends on several factors, including the size, color and depth of the tattoo. -
Protective eyewear:
Both the customer and the specialist wear protective goggles to protect the eyes from the laser beams. -
Laser treatment:
During the treatment, the specialist places the laser over the tattoo. The laser pulses are fired and the ink begins to fragment. -
Skin reaction:
After treatment, the skin may become red and slightly swollen. This is usually short-lived. -
Recovery and multiple sessions:
The customer must follow the specialist's instructions for aftercare. Repeating the treatment is necessary to gradually fade the tattoo.
Benefits of Pico Laser Tattoo Removal
-
Faster results:
The ultra-short pulses of the pico laser ensure faster fragmentation of ink particles, leading to faster results compared to older laser technologies. -
Fewer side effects:
The precision of the pico laser minimizes damage to the surrounding tissue, reducing the chance of side effects such as scars. -
Suitable for different ink colors:
The pico laser is effective at removing tattoos of various colors, including difficult-to-treat colors such as green and blue.
